The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust. - Psalms 18:2
In this painting, I wanted to show the Savior with his staff as one who can both protect us and comfort us in our times of need. I wanted Him to appear strong and yet gentle at the same time, symbolizing that He is a foundation we can rely on, and yet a loving friend and advocate as well.
“He leadeth me beside the still waters….Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalms 23:2, 4) This image was used on the front cover of the April 2000 Ensign magazine, and for many, it was the first time they saw my artwork. “The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles” was the first article in the magazine, and I thought it such an honor to have my artwork shown on that particular issue. I painted this image to show the Savior with his rod and staff that comfort us in our times of need. - Simon Dewey
